Understand Bangkok

Officially known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, Bangkok is Thailand's capital and a special administrative area covering 1,568.74 square kilometres on the lower Chao Phraya River. Its 50 districts and 180 subdistricts include the historic old city, riverside communities, major commercial centres and extensive residential areas.

Choosing the right district matters. The old city and riverside suit many first-time sightseeing plans, while central districts such as Pathum Wan, Bang Rak, Sathon, Watthana and Khlong Toei provide access to shopping, offices, nightlife and rapid transit. Outer districts offer quieter neighbourhoods, local markets and different housing options. Individual hotels, restaurants, attractions and services belong to their relevant district or subdistrict pages so that information remains geographically accurate.

Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and MRT networks are useful for many central journeys, supported by river boats, buses, taxis and app-based transport. Road congestion can make short trips slow, so visitors and residents should compare areas by the journeys they expect to make and choose accommodation near suitable transport links.

Population figures vary because they measure different things. The civil registration system recorded 5,455,020 registered residents in Bangkok at the end of 2024. A separate National Statistical Office projection estimated about 8.46 million people residing in Bangkok in mid-2024. Greater Bangkok also includes surrounding provinces such as Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan, but those provinces are not administratively inside Bangkok and are not child places of this node.
