Understand Chon Buri

Chon Buri is an Eastern Thailand province on the Gulf of Thailand, close enough to Bangkok for short coastal breaks yet varied enough for a longer trip. Its coast combines the established resort city of Pattaya, the Thai seaside atmosphere of Bang Saen and Ang Sila, the port and commercial centre of Si Racha, historic Ko Si Chang, and the quieter naval-coast landscapes and islands around Sattahip. Inland districts add reservoirs, farms and forested hills, while the industrial Eastern Seaboard gives the province a busier, more urban character than many beach destinations.

Choose a base by travel style. Mueang Chon Buri District works well for Bang Saen, Ang Sila, Khao Sam Muk and local food; Bang Lamung District contains Pattaya, Jomtien and the departure points for Ko Lan; Si Racha is the usual mainland gateway for Ko Si Chang; and Sattahip suits travellers seeking a quieter southern coast and access to the Samae San area. Some islands and beaches around military-administered areas can have visitor limits, identity requirements or changing access arrangements, so confirm the current rules before setting out.

The province covers 4,363.00 square kilometres. At 31 December 2024 it was divided into 11 districts, 92 subdistricts and 687 villages. Its registered population was 1,635,525 in 2024; this is the province-wide civil-registration count reported by Thailand's National Statistical Office from Department of Provincial Administration data, not a count of tourists, temporary residents or the Pattaya urban population.

Road travel is the main way to arrive and move between the province's widely separated coastal centres. Buses and vans connect Bangkok with Chon Buri, Si Racha, Pattaya and Sattahip, while local transport varies by area. Passenger rail reaches parts of the eastern corridor, but service is limited compared with road travel; check the current State Railway of Thailand timetable. Boats to Ko Lan and Ko Si Chang use different piers, while access to smaller islands can be controlled or weather-dependent. U-Tapao Airport is nearby in Rayong Province, so verify current flights and onward travel. November to February is generally the most comfortable period for outdoor plans; March and April are hotter, and the southwest-monsoon period, broadly May to October, brings heavier showers and rougher-sea days. For a first trip, combine one mainland base with one island or quieter coastal area. Reserve key transport and accommodation for weekends and Thai holidays, allow extra road time, check ferry and marine forecasts, and confirm protected- or military-area rules shortly before travel.
