Understand Trang

This page covers Trang Province, not only Trang City. The province extends from inland hills and caves to a long Andaman coastline and offshore islands. Ko Muk and Morakot Cave, Ko Kradan, Ko Libong, Tham Le Khao Kob and the coast around Hat Chao Mai are among its best-known visitor areas. Ko Libong's seagrass habitat is important for dugongs, but wildlife sightings should never be expected or pursued in ways that disturb the animals.

Choose a base around the trip you want. Trang City is the inland provincial capital and the practical hub for the airport, railway, markets and local food, while beaches, piers and islands require onward road or boat transfers. Island schedules, departure points and accommodation availability vary by destination and season, so confirm the complete transfer with the operator or accommodation before travel rather than assuming every island uses the same pier. Mainland cave and community visits can be combined with the city more easily than an offshore stay.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand recommends December to May for a Trang visit, while also noting that some resorts close into the early high season and seasonal pricing dates vary. Rain, wind and sea conditions can still affect boats, cave access and marine activities. Check the current forecast, national-park notices and operator schedules before departure.
