About Yala
Yala is a landlocked province in Thailand's deep south. Its planned provincial capital and the southern Betong area are different destinations, separated by substantial onward travel. Local life reflects Thai-Muslim, Buddhist and Chinese-Thai cultural influences.
The central mosque and the capital's parks provide urban context. Bang Lang Dam and the surrounding forest landscape offer a different setting, while Betong is associated with hot springs, local food and the Aiyerweng highland viewpoint. Mist and other natural displays depend on conditions and should not be treated as guaranteed attractions.
Plan by district and confirm the complete road journey, current local restrictions and return arrangements. A provincial listing does not establish that a remote site is accessible or that an international crossing is operating. As reviewed on 25 October 2026, FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Yala because of the security situation. Check current official advice and local instructions before planning travel, and dress respectfully when visiting religious sites and communities.
Yala Province covers 4,521.08 square kilometres and had 8 districts, 58 subdistricts and 381 villages at 31 December 2024. Its 2024 registered population was 552,974; this is a whole-province civil-registration count, distinct from the capital city or an estimate of visitors.
Southern east-coast rainfall can continue late in the year, particularly during the northeast monsoon. Use current forecasts for the exact district and activity; mainland, upland and offshore conditions may differ.
