Understand Pattaya

Pattaya is a coastal resort city and special local government area in Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri Province, about 150 kilometres southeast of Bangkok. Its official jurisdiction covers 208.10 square kilometres: 53.44 square kilometres of land, including Ko Lan, and 154.66 square kilometres of water. The city boundary includes designated parts of Na Kluea, Nong Prue, Huai Yai and Nong Pla Lai subdistricts, so those subdistricts remain distinct geographic areas within the wider city. Visitors use Pattaya as a base for its urban beaches, restaurants, shopping and nightlife, as well as swimming, sailing, snorkelling and other water activities. Ko Lan is part of Pattaya City and is a practical day-trip option, with local transport available on the island. Pattaya can be visited year-round, but travellers should check current weather and marine conditions before beach or island journeys. Road travel from Bangkok is the most common approach. The State Railway of Thailand also publishes services calling at Pattaya Station, including ordinary weekday and special weekend trains, while U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport is another gateway for routes it currently serves. Check official operators for live schedules before travelling. In busy visitor areas, keep valuables secure; when visiting Buddhist temples, dress respectfully and remove shoes where required.
