Account opening is case-specific

Bank policies can vary by institution, branch, visa or stay status and intended use. Ask the chosen bank for its current document list before travelling to a branch. Bring originals and a clear Thai address or supporting residence evidence if requested; no intermediary can guarantee approval.

Compare the complete transfer cost

For international transfers, compare the sending fee, receiving fee and exchange-rate margin together. Choose the purpose code truthfully and keep evidence for large transfers. A rate described as free can still include a material currency spread.

Use cash and QR payments deliberately

Cash remains useful, while Thai QR payments are widespread for eligible local accounts. Keep at least two independent payment methods and check ATM prompts carefully. Declining dynamic currency conversion can avoid accepting an operator-selected home-currency rate.

Treat payment messages as hostile

Never disclose one-time codes, PINs or app credentials. Verify a new recipient through a separate channel, especially for property deposits or business invoices. Freeze access quickly after loss, retain transaction evidence and contact the bank through an official number rather than a link in a message.

Verify before you act
