Thailand changed its visa-exemption and Visa on Arrival arrangements on 15 September 2026. Do not rely on an old blog post, a travel agent’s memory or the rules from your last trip. Your passport nationality, travel date, purpose and intended length of stay determine the correct route.
Start with the right entry route
Tourists usually enter through one of three routes: visa exemption, Visa on Arrival (VoA), or a Tourist Visa obtained before travel. These are not interchangeable. Visa exemption is permission to seek entry without first obtaining a visa; VoA is available only to the nationalities and conditions in the official scheme; a Tourist Visa is applied for in advance and may be the appropriate route when your nationality, planned stay or itinerary does not fit an exemption.
Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the revised 2026 arrangements provide a 30-day tourism exemption to 60 eligible countries and territories, a new 15-day exemption to two, and VoA eligibility to three. The official nationality tables—not those headline numbers—are what matter for an individual traveller. Check the MFA’s current matrix immediately before booking and again before departure.
Visa validity is not permission to stay
A visa allows you to travel to the border and request entry during its validity period. Immigration decides whether to admit you and records the permitted-until date. That date controls your lawful stay. Check it before leaving the counter and keep a clear copy. A flight cancellation, illness or misunderstanding does not automatically extend permission.
When a Tourist Visa is the sensible choice
- Your passport is not covered by the exemption or VoA arrangement that fits your trip.
- Your planned tourism stay is longer than the permission available on arrival.
- Your route includes repeated entries and you need an option designed for that pattern.
- An airline, onward country or previous immigration history makes a documented advance application prudent.
A Tourist Visa is for tourism. It does not authorise employment. If the real purpose is work, study, business, retirement or joining family, identify the matching visa category instead of trying to make a tourist route cover it.
Apply only through the official channel
Begin at the official Thai e‑Visa portal and follow the instructions for the embassy or consulate responsible for your place of residence. Availability, accepted residence evidence, fees, processing arrangements and document requests can differ by post. Create your own account, enter names exactly as printed in the passport machine-readable zone, and keep the application reference and payment record.
Never buy a supposed approval through a social-media message or a lookalike domain. A third party may help organise documents, but the applicant remains responsible for every declaration and upload.
Build a consistent application
The official checklist for your post is decisive. Common evidence can include the passport identity page, a recent photograph, proof of current location or residence, transport bookings, accommodation, travel plans and evidence that you can fund the visit. Additional documents may be requested.
- Passport: use a clear colour scan with all details visible; check the validity and blank-page requirements published for your route.
- Name and passport number: copy them exactly and recheck every digit before submission.
- Travel dates: make flights, accommodation and the stated length of stay agree.
- Accommodation: show a credible plan for the trip, including the address requested for arrival formalities.
- Funds and ties: provide genuine, readable evidence where required; unexplained deposits or altered documents create risk.
- Previous travel: answer questions truthfully, including refusals, overstays or passport changes.
Do not commit to non-refundable travel solely because an application has been submitted. Processing time is not guaranteed, and an officer may request more information.
Before departure
- Recheck the MFA nationality table and the conditions of the route you will actually use.
- Confirm that passport, visa details and ticket names match.
- Carry accessible copies of the visa approval if applicable, onward or return travel, accommodation, insurance and financial evidence.
- Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card through the official Immigration site within the timeframe shown there. The official TDAC service states that no fee is required.
- Check airline transit rules and the entry rules of any country used for a connection.
At the border
Approval of a visa or TDAC does not guarantee admission. Be ready to explain the tourism purpose, intended address, length of stay and onward plan simply and consistently. Present documents when asked, remain calm, and do not joke about work, prohibited goods or false bookings. After admission, verify the permitted-until date recorded by Immigration.
During the trip
Keep track of the permitted-until date yourself. If plans change, consult Thai Immigration before it expires; an extension is a separate application and is never automatic. Do not work—including informal or unpaid work that may legally count as work—without the correct authorisation. Keep your accommodation informed of passport changes and retain copies of important immigration records.
Common failure points
- Using an outdated 60-day exemption article after the September 2026 revision.
- Choosing a tourism route when the real purpose is work or another regulated activity.
- Submitting inconsistent dates, names, bookings or residence information.
- Assuming an e‑Visa can be obtained from any country regardless of residence rules.
- Confusing visa validity with the period granted at entry.
- Waiting until the final day to investigate an extension or correct an error.
- Using unofficial payment links for e‑Visa or TDAC services.
