Ask the seller for their full registered name, licence number, insurer represented and contact details, then check the Office of Insurance Commission online licence register. The OIC services distinguish individual agents and brokers, corporate brokers and revoked licences. Match the seller, product and payee before transferring money, and obtain the full policy wording, schedule, receipt and written answers to important coverage questions. Be cautious if a seller will not provide a licence number, pressures you to pay immediately, asks for payment to an unrelated personal account or promises that exclusions and claims checks do not matter. The OIC also operates consumer information and complaint channels if a dispute cannot be resolved with the insurer or intermediary.
