Do foreign residents automatically get public healthcare in Thailand?
No. Eligibility depends on the person's legal and employment circumstances and the particular public scheme; residence or a visa alone does not establish entitlement.
Overview
Foreign residence or a Thai visa does not by itself establish automatic access to every public healthcare scheme. A person employed and insured under Thailand's Social Security system may have medical-treatment rights through that scheme; the Ministry of Labour has confirmed equal Section 33 medical-treatment rights for insured foreign workers. Other groups can be subject to different systems or may need private cover. Ask the employer, Social Security Office or other responsible authority to confirm eligibility, the registered treatment facility, start and end dates, dependant rules and any contribution or registration requirements. Do not cancel existing cover until the replacement entitlement is confirmed in writing.
