Will my health or travel insurance pay for treatment in Thailand?

Overview

There is no single answer for every visitor or resident. Payment depends on the public scheme, employer arrangement or private policy for which you are eligible, the treatment required, the provider used and whether approval is needed. A visa or Thai address does not by itself establish entitlement to a public scheme, and an insurance card does not mean every facility can bill the insurer directly. Before non-emergency treatment, ask the payer about outpatient and inpatient benefits, provider networks, exclusions, pre-existing-condition terms, deductibles or co-payments, benefit limits, waiting periods, pre-authorisation, emergency assistance and medical evacuation. Ask the provider separately whether it offers direct billing for that specific payer. If it does not, you may need to pay and claim reimbursement under the policy terms. Obtain a written estimate where practical, but understand that the final charge can change with clinical needs. Keep approval references, medical reports, prescriptions, itemised bills and receipts. In an immediate medical emergency, call 1669 and do not delay urgent care to settle an insurance question.
