About Loei
Loei occupies Thailand's mountainous upper northeast, where the Phetchabun ranges meet river valleys and the Mekong border with Laos. Its appeal is spread across cool-season viewpoints, demanding national-park trails, forest and limestone landscapes, temple traditions and small towns rather than one central resort. Loei city is the administrative and transport base, while Chiang Khan's old wooden riverside quarter and Mekong promenade provide the province's best-known relaxed stay.
Choose districts carefully because the main experiences are far apart. Chiang Khan and Pak Chom follow the Mekong; Dan Sai is associated with Phra That Si Song Rak and the Bun Luang and Phi Ta Khon tradition, whose dates are determined locally each year; Phu Ruea offers highland scenery and easier road access than the climb at Phu Kradueng; and Na Haeo leads to remote border mountains and Phu Suan Sai National Park. Nong Hin is the gateway to Suan Hin Pha Ngam's limestone formations, while Phu Luang is known for protected upland landscapes. Each area works best as a focused excursion or overnight base rather than a quick loop from Loei city.
Loei covers 11,424.61 square kilometres. At 31 December 2024 it was divided into 14 districts, 90 subdistricts and 919 villages. Its registered population was 632,187 in 2024; this is the province-wide civil-registration count reported by Thailand's National Statistical Office from Department of Provincial Administration data, not the population of Loei city and not a visitor count. Loei Airport and long-distance buses connect the capital with Bangkok and regional centres; there is no passenger railway in the province. Public transport beyond principal towns is limited, so a car or arranged driver is usually the practical choice for parks and multi-district routes.
November to February is generally the most comfortable season, with genuinely cool nights possible at elevation. March to May can be very hot and hazy, while the May-to-October wet season brings green scenery alongside heavy rain, slippery trails and changing river or road conditions. Phu Kradueng requires a strenuous ascent and may close seasonally or for safety and conservation; check current DNP rules, registration and accommodation before travel. Confirm annual Phi Ta Khon dates rather than assuming a fixed weekend, pack layers for high ground, and allow generous driving time. Mekong sandbars and rapids are seasonal, and border crossings require separate checks of current immigration rules and opening status.
