About Phrae

Phrae Province offers a quieter introduction to northern cultural heritage, with a provincial town known for timber architecture and important Buddhist sites. Its wider territory includes forested uplands, river landscapes and communities outside the old-town area.

Khum Wong Buri and Khum Chao Luang illustrate the elaborate timber architecture associated with the region's past. Wat Chom Sawan is noted for its teak structure, and Wat Phra That Cho Hae is a principal provincial sanctuary. Phae Mueang Phi features eroded soil and sandstone formations, while Wiang Kosai and Doi Pha Klong national parks provide different outdoor settings.

The town works well as a base for heritage visits, but parks and rural stops require a separate road plan. Confirm onward transport and current access for your chosen destination rather than relying on the province name alone. Treat historic interiors and religious sites respectfully, and stay on marked paths around eroded formations. Forest outings depend on weather and park guidance; check conditions and allow daylight for the return journey.

Phrae Province covers 6,538.60 square kilometres and had 8 districts, 78 subdistricts and 708 villages at 31 December 2024. Its 2024 registered population was 421,745; this is a whole-province civil-registration count, distinct from the capital city or an estimate of visitors.

November to February generally offers cooler conditions for outdoor visits. The hotter period and the rains bring different travel considerations, with rain usually increasing from around May to October; check current forecasts for your route.
