About Surin

Surin is a northeastern province in the Mun River basin, with farming communities, textile craftsmanship and a culturally diverse population. Its provincial town is a service base, while weaving villages and historic sites lie across the wider province.

Wat Burapharam and Surin National Museum offer religious and historical context. Ban Tha Sawang is associated with fine silk weaving, and Huai Saneng provides a reservoir setting. Elephant-keeping traditions are connected with Kuy communities, but visitors should assess welfare and choose activities that avoid riding, forced performances or disturbance.

Plan town visits and rural craft stops around their actual locations and current visitor arrangements. Border monuments require a separate decision: an older listing of Ta Muean Thom is not proof that the site is open or reachable today. As reviewed on 25 October 2026, FCDO reports closures at some frontier monuments, suspended Thailand–Cambodia land crossings and advice against all but essential travel within 20 km of the border. Check current official guidance before planning frontier travel.

Surin Province covers 8,124.06 square kilometres and had 17 districts, 159 subdistricts and 2128 villages at 31 December 2024. Its 2024 registered population was 1,360,245; this is a whole-province civil-registration count, distinct from the capital city or an estimate of visitors.

November to February generally offers cooler conditions for outdoor visits. The hotter period and the rains bring different travel considerations, with rain usually increasing from around May to October; check current forecasts for your route.
