About Ubon Ratchathani
Ubon Ratchathani is an extensive northeastern province with a major urban base and rural landscapes reaching the Laos and Cambodia frontiers. The Mun River and the Mekong-facing eastern districts provide different settings, so the province should be planned as several areas rather than one city visit.
Pha Taem National Park is known for prehistoric rock paintings and river-facing scenery. Kaeng Thana and Phu Chong Na Yoi offer other protected landscapes, while Wat Phra That Nong Bua is a notable religious landmark. The capital's candle festival around the beginning of Buddhist Lent is an important cultural event; dates and viewing arrangements need current confirmation.
Separate town and temple visits from longer journeys to river and park areas. Confirm the chosen entrance and onward transport, and allow sufficient daylight for the return journey rather than assuming all attractions are close to the urban centre. Water levels alter riverside scenery and access. Check park notices and forecasts; for the Cambodian frontier, consult current official security advice and crossing restrictions before travel. Do not assume that an international border is open.
Ubon Ratchathani Province covers 15,744.85 square kilometres and had 25 districts, 219 subdistricts and 2704 villages at 31 December 2024. Its 2024 registered population was 1,867,942; this is a whole-province civil-registration count, distinct from the capital city or an estimate of visitors.
November to February generally offers cooler conditions for outdoor visits. The hotter period and the rains bring different travel considerations, with rain usually increasing from around May to October; check current forecasts for your route.
