Flower festivals in Thailand: where and how to plan

For the current season, consider Udon Thani’s horticultural expo, scheduled for 1 November 2026–14 March 2027. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai offer separate flower festivals; match the full name, venue and year before booking.

Choose a festival or a flower-viewing trip Thailand’s flower calendar includes organised festivals, illuminated garden events and natural blooms.
Chiang Mai: the flower festival with the parade The main Chiang Mai Flower Festival combines flower displays at Nong Buak Haad Public Park with a floral-float parade.

Find what you need

Use a section below to plan your next step.

Choose a festival or a flower-viewing trip

Thailand’s flower calendar includes organised festivals, illuminated garden events and natural blooms. They offer different experiences. A parade has a particular route and start time; a garden exhibition may run for weeks; a natural bloom depends on conditions rather than an opening ceremony.

For a first trip, choose one base and one main event. Staying close to the festival you actually want is usually more useful than trying to combine distant flower sites in a single day. The comparisons below are editorial planning guidance, with past official programmes used to identify the events.

Which flower event fits your trip?

Comparison What to expect Venue and timing to verify
Chiang Mai Flower Festival Floral floats, growers’ displays and northern cultural activities. Nong Buak Haad Park and the announced parade route; check the next February programme.
Charming Chiang Mai Flowers A separate garden event with illuminated displays and scheduled shows. Provincial Government Center / PAO garden area in the cited 2025–26 programme, not the Old City park.
Chiang Rai ASEAN Flower Festival Seasonal garden displays with cultural, food and community activities. The cited edition used a main riverside garden and additional district venues; identify the zone you intend to visit.
Red Lotus Sea, Udon Thani An early-morning boat outing among seasonal water-lily blooms. Nong Han in Kumphawapi; a natural seasonal attraction rather than the Chiang Mai-style parade festival.

Current season: Udon Thani horticultural expo, 2026–27

The Royal Thai Government and the organiser publish 1 November 2026–14 March 2027 for the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo at Nong Dae, Kut Sa subdistrict, Mueang district. This is a horticultural exhibition, with international gardens, plant displays and agricultural themes, rather than a short street-parade festival.

The organiser’s programme lists different activities across the season, including orchid displays in early November and flower-garden competitions later in the month. Check your date against the current activity calendar if a particular plant display is the reason for visiting.

Use the organiser’s own ticket link and site map to check the admission category, conditions, opening arrangements and entrance. Allow time for walking around a large site, ask about internal transport or access assistance, and arrange the return journey from the actual entrance. The expo is separate from the Red Lotus Sea outing at Nong Han in Kumphawapi.

Chiang Mai: the flower festival with the parade

The main Chiang Mai Flower Festival combines flower displays at Nong Buak Haad Public Park with a floral-float parade. The park name also appears as Suan Buak Hat or Nong Buak Hard in English. Save the actual venue pin so the spelling does not cause confusion.

The officially documented 2026 edition ran on 13–15 February, with its parade beginning at Nawarat Bridge on 14 February. These are past dates, included to identify the event. They show why assuming “the first weekend of February” is unreliable. This guide does not treat an unconfirmed 2027 weekend as a booking date.

Choose the parade if you want movement, costumes and a lively street atmosphere. Choose the park displays if you prefer to spend time examining flowers and arrangements. Once the new programme appears, check whether floats remain on display and which areas are open when you plan to arrive.

Charming Chiang Mai Flowers is a different event

The government’s 2025–26 listing placed Charming Chiang Mai Flowers at the Provincial Government Center and PAO garden area, with flower exhibitions, evening lighting and scheduled performances. That edition ran from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026.

Do not use those dates or that venue for the February parade festival. If searching for an evening garden visit, confirm the next Charming programme, the particular display you want and its admission arrangements. A garden’s daytime opening and a show’s start time are different pieces of information.

Chiang Rai: check the event zone as well as the name

The cited Chiang Rai ASEAN Flower Festival programme ran from December 2025 into January 2026. It identified a main riverside garden at the provincial administrative organisation and additional zones in Wiang Chai and Mae Sai. These are past-edition details, not confirmed dates for the coming season.

A hotel in central Chiang Rai will not automatically put you within walking distance of every zone. Pick the venue first, then compare the journey and return transport. Ask which garden, performances and markets are included at that particular site; a poster for the whole festival can describe activities spread over more than one location.

Natural blooms: plan differently from a festival

Udon Thani’s Red Lotus Sea is at Nong Han Lake in Kumphawapi district. Official tourism guidance identifies December–February as the usual viewing period and recommends an early-morning visit, around 06:00–10:00, when the flowers are open. Bloom coverage varies.

Check recent conditions and the operating pier before arranging the drive. Confirm the boat, total fare, passenger capacity, life jackets and what happens in poor weather. Do not travel expecting a guaranteed carpet of flowers on a particular day. The same principle applies to mountain blossom and flower-field trips: ask about this week’s conditions, not just last year’s photographs.

Make the visit comfortable

For a parade, plan the walk and collection point around any announced road closures. For an evening garden, agree on the return ride before entering; a daytime bus or hotel shuttle may not run after the final show. Leave time to walk from the vehicle to the actual entrance.

Ask about surfaces, steps, toilets and places to rest if travelling with a wheelchair, pushchair or someone who tires easily. A public park or garden is not proof of a fully step-free temporary event. Carry drinking water, sun protection and a light layer for a cool early start. Check weather and air-quality conditions near your date, especially if respiratory health affects your plans.

Photograph from paths and designated viewing areas. Avoid stepping into beds, picking flowers or blocking parade participants. Ask before close portraits, and keep a clear route for other visitors.

Questions travellers ask

Are the February festival and Charming Chiang Mai Flowers the same?

No. Official notices identify different events and venues. Match the full event name and year before booking.

Are next season’s dates confirmed here?

No future programme is asserted in this guide. The dated examples are past official editions; use a new organiser or TAT announcement to confirm your trip.

Can I visit outside festival dates?

You may be able to visit gardens or natural attractions, but festival installations, stalls and shows should not be assumed to remain. Check the venue’s normal admission and opening arrangements.
