About Phang Yang Subdistrict

Phang Yang (พังยาง) is a subdistrict of Ranot District, Songkhla. The local authority describes a lowland landscape of settlements and rice fields, adjoining Ranot, Wat Son, Rawa and Rong in neighbouring Krasae Sin District.

The Fine Arts Department identifies the ancient Phang Yang community around Wat Phang Yang, with traces of enclosing moats and earth banks. Archaeological finds document wider trading and religious connections across Asia.

According to local naming tradition, phang refers to a pond and yang to the large tree beside it. The story reflects the importance of shared freshwater supplies on the peninsula between the Gulf coast and Songkhla Lake.
