What has changed
Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport will replace handheld metal-detector checks with manual pat-downs for secondary passenger screening from 1 November, according to its announcement reported on 27 October.
Passengers will continue to pass through a walk-through metal detector or body scanner. When further examination is required, security staff will use a pat-down instead of the handheld detector for that stage of the process.
What is changing
The Nation and The Pattaya News report the same effective date and describe the change as part of the airport’s effort to strengthen aviation security. The announced approach refers to Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand Regulation No. 113 and International Civil Aviation Organization recommendations.
The change concerns passenger screening at Don Mueang. It should not be read as an announcement that every Thai airport has introduced an identical procedure, or that the airport is removing its primary screening equipment.
Prepare before reaching the checkpoint
The airport warns that checks could take slightly longer, particularly at busy times. Allow sufficient time before departure and use the queue to prepare metal items and belongings for screening, following the instructions given at the checkpoint.
Passengers whose circumstances could affect screening, including an injury, an implanted medical device or pregnancy, are asked to tell a security officer before the process begins. The airport says searches will be carried out appropriately and with respect for passengers’ rights.
The announcement does not give a fixed additional waiting time. Check the airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines as well as the latest airport guidance; an allowance for security does not extend those deadlines.
Separate from checked-baggage inspections
The pat-down announcement is a different measure from the checked-bag inspection changes introduced earlier in October. Preparing hand luggage, passing passenger screening and checking a suitcase remain separate parts of the departure journey.
Travellers using Don Mueang from 1 November should watch for updated airport instructions and ask staff for clarification if unsure how a particular item or personal circumstance will be handled.
