What has changed
Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry is preparing to seek a 15-day visa exemption for travellers from Mexico, Colombia and Uzbekistan, following reports that slow visa processing is disrupting holidays and airline bookings.
Reports published on 27 October say the ministry plans to put the proposal before the Visa Policy Committee on 9 November. The reported plan remains a proposal: no final approval, implementation date or detailed eligibility notice has been announced in the sources reviewed for this update.
Why the ministry wants a change
The Pattaya News and The Nation describe delays that have left some passengers unable to obtain their Thai visas before scheduled departures. Tourism representatives have raised particular concerns about Latin American markets, including Mexico and Colombia, and difficulties affecting Uzbek travellers.
The reports also describe airline complaints about missed departures and tour operators redirecting some customers to competing destinations. These are accounts of disruption in the affected markets, rather than a measure of all international arrivals to Thailand.
What the committee still has to consider
The proposed initial stay is up to 15 days. The committee would need to assess security and economic considerations before any decision. The reports refer to the three named countries alongside other potential markets, but do not provide an approved final list.
For travellers, the key distinction is between the planned committee discussion and an entry rule that can actually be used. A 9 November meeting would not, by itself, establish a start date for visa-free travel.
Before booking or departing
Check the requirements applying to the passport, purpose of travel and intended arrival date with the responsible Thai embassy or consulate. Use the official Thai e-Visa portal where an application is required, and follow that mission’s instructions.
Do not cancel an application or rely on the proposed waiver solely because it has been reported in the news. Keep sufficient flexibility in flights and accommodation while waiting for a decision, and check for an official implementation notice before changing travel plans.
