What you need to know
What has changed
Expanded Bank of Thailand checks on large cash transactions came into force on 1 November 2026. The central bank announced the change on 26 October under Notification 57/2569.
What the checks cover
Financial institutions must apply enhanced due diligence to cash deposits totalling at least five million baht within the same day. Depending on customer risk, this can involve questions about the money’s origin and purpose, or requests for supporting documents.
The expansion also covers specified high-value cash transactions involving unclear-origin cheques or drafts, baht banknote exchange, cash used to obtain cheques or drafts, foreign-currency transactions and payments for insurance, investment products or derivatives.
Scope and customer impact
The central bank says these rules apply to transactions conducted through branches and do not affect customers’ use of electronic channels. It also requires institutions to report unusual activity and provide prompt, fair assistance to affected customers.
Customers planning a large branch transaction should ask their institution what information it needs. The announcement describes risk-based checks rather than a single document checklist for everyone. The change is now effective; it is not a proposal awaiting approval.
