About Ko Taen (Koh Tan)
Ko Taen, also commonly written Koh Tan, lies off the Taling Ngam coast of Ko Samui. It is a separate physical island within Ko Samui District, rather than a village on the main island. Provincial planning documents identify an established community here.
TAT's visitor account describes the reef off the island, its eastern beach, mangroves and a white Buddha image. Reef visits are often combined with nearby Ko Matsum, but Taen has its own community and landscape. Mangrove walks and local roads offer a different focus from a beach-only excursion when access is available.
Traditional longtail trips depart from the Thong Krut area on southern Ko Samui. Agree the landing point, snorkeling arrangements and return boat in advance. Ask which community paths are open and whether meals or accommodation need booking. Respect occupied homes and local religious sites. Keep clear of coral and follow the boat crew's advice on currents, weather and permitted swimming areas.
