What has changed
Thailand's Ministry of Transport is targeting 25 December 2026 for a toll-free, round-the-clock trial along the entire 196-kilometre M6 motorway between Bang Pa-in and Nakhon Ratchasima. The plan is intended to ease New Year journeys between the Bangkok region and the Northeast.
The latest update was reported on 6 November. It describes a future trial-opening target, not an announcement that the whole route is already operating under those arrangements.
Trial travel before the full toll system
The ministry update follows Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn's review of major road projects on 4 November. The Department of Highways reported civil construction at 99.81% and operational systems at 96.42%.
A separate report on a Senate transport committee inspection in Nakhon Ratchasima on 6 November also identified 25 December as the expected start of 24-hour operation. Both accounts put full operations with toll collection on the current plan for April 2027.
The distinction matters for holiday budgeting: the December proposal is a free trial, while the later full-service stage is expected to charge tolls. These remain announced project milestones rather than evidence of completed commissioning.
Check present access before travelling
Anyone driving before 25 December should check the current Department of Highways arrangements for their specific entry point, direction and travel day. A future all-route opening does not remove existing temporary access rules or construction diversions.
For Christmas and New Year plans, use the date as a planning target and check the final operational notice nearer departure. Confirm vehicle eligibility, available interchanges, services and any directional arrangements before committing to a route. The new announcement does not provide a complete final traveller operating guide.
The motorway is intended to take pressure off Phahonyothin and Mittraphap roads. Actual journey times will still depend on access arrangements and holiday traffic at connecting roads.
